I made the DNC dress Kamala Harris' stepdaughter Ella Emhoff wore, but most people missed the hidden detail

While rumors swirled that Taylor Swift and Beyoncé would take the stage as 'surprise guests' during the final evening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, there was someone else who everyone had their eyes on: Ella Emhoff.

The 25-year-old daughter of Kamala Harris' husband and Second Gentleman Doug addressed the crowd alongside the Democratic presidential nominee's niece, Meena, and goddaughter Helena Hudlin.

Emhoff spoke lovingly about her stepmom last night, or as she calls her, 'Momala,' praising her as 'patient' and 'caring.'

But while Harris and her husband may have been proud of Emhoff for her adoring speech, there was one more person who could have been even more excited to see her take the stage - and that was her dressmaker, 28-year-old Joe Ando-Hirsh.

Ando-Hirsh, a former actor-turned-designer who once starred on the hit show The Walking Dead, was the genius behind Emhoff's look for the final night of the DNC, where she stunned in an intricately designed dress, complete with matching white socks and black Mary Jane-style ballet flats.

The gorgeous garment featured a pale blue, off-the-shoulder top with a carefully-crafted flower knit by Emhoff herself on the right side of the sleeve - perfectly on theme with the official color of the Democratic Party.

The bottom of the dress featured some more playful elements, like a tulle drop waist with scalloped edges that cascaded into a full, white pleated skirt.

The young woman, who has gone viral in the past for her bold looks, tied everything together with a tight, slick-backed bun and her signature wire-frame glasses.

Of course, Ando-Hirsh was watching the whole thing, and he even took to his Instagram last night to share his reaction to the special moment.

He posted a sweet clip of himself as he watched Emhoff take the stage on his own TV, writing in the caption, 'Watching a dress you made on national TV.'

Ando-Hirsh set the video to Miley Cyrus' hit song, 'Party in the U.S.A.,' as he enthusiastically pumped his fist from his couch.

Emhoff herself left Ando-Hirsh a comment on the clip, writing, 'WE DID IT JOE!!!!!' - a hilarious reference to her stepmom's reaction to winning the 2020 election alongside President Joe Biden.

Amazingly, Ando-Hirsh only had a week to make the dress due to other projects he had going on, the designer told DailyMail.com via email on Friday.

'Like a lot of young people, I didn't always understand what I was feeling, but no matter what, Kamala was there,' Emhoff told the crowd about Kamala Harris, who married Doug in 2014

'I worked about 15 hour days for a week which included creative development, draping, patterning, sewing, trial and error and fittings with Ella,' he said, describing Emhoff as 'amazing.'

'We really wanted it to feel like an elegant tea party but make it modern and elevated,' Ando-Hirsh told DailyMail.com.

He explained that Emhoff wanted to work with an 'independent designer' and 'thought it would be a genuine creative process,' which it was.

'Ella was so happily involved and really felt the passion for the start to finish design experience,' Ando-Hirsh said.

'Watching her take the stage, was amazing, she looked perfect! The dress really reflected her range of style and she really popped out in such a classy way.'

Ando-Hirsh documented himself creating the dress on both his TikTok and Instagram pages, as he showed Emhoff in his studio picking out fabric for what he called a 'historical dress.'

A graduate of Parsons School of Design, the daughter of Doug and ex Kerstin is also an artist, making her own knit creations which she often shows off on social media.

But Emhoff, who has modeled for Proenza Schouler and Miu Miu, isn't the only prominent public figure that Ando-Hirsh has designed for.

Ando-Hirsh, who studied womenswear at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, seems to incorporate a variety of fabrics into his designs, working with silks, tulles and lace.

In addition to his work as a designer, Ando-Hirsh is also a popular content creator, boasting nearly three million followers on his TikTok account and more than two million followers on Instagram.

He's gone viral for his dressmaking series, where he will ask people, 'Can I make you a dress?' and shows off his stunning designs.

In addition to his videos about his designs, Ando-Hirsh also makes shorts about daily life and family, and was recently featured in Vogue Italy for his work.

And, if that's not enough, the 28-year-old is also an actor, starring as Rodney in The Walking Dead, and in CBS action show Macgyver.

He's even appeared in commercials for popular insurance company State Farm and Hasbro Toys.

But at the end of the day, it seems like fashion design is truly where his heart lies.

Emhoff explained during her speech at the convention that Harris first came into her life when she was just 14, a challenging time in any young teenager's life

He told Forbes last year that his 'true aesthetic' was a cross between 'preppy' and 'kitschy.'

'I get a lot of joy out of handing someone a custom piece of clothing and seeing them react to something that no one else owns,' he told the outlet at the time.

'I get the most joy out of seeing someone wear something I’ve made more than once, even as a casual daily part of their wardrobe.'

And, while it's unclear if Emhoff will wear Ando-Hirsh's dress once again, it's clear that the look and her appearance on stage made for a memorable moment.

She explained during her speech at the convention that Harris first came into her life when she was just 14, a challenging time in any young teenager's life.

'Like a lot of young people, I didn't always understand what I was feeling, but no matter what, Kamala was there,' Emhoff told the crowd about her stepmom.

'She's never stopped listening to me and she's not going to stop listening to all of us.'
