Five siblings of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. issued a withering statement following his endorsement of Donald Trump, calling it a 'betrayal' of their father RFK's values.
They issued the statement minutes after RFK, Jr.'s announcement that he would break with the party's long history as a bulwark of the Democratic Party and throw his support to Trump – the day after Harris accepted the party nomination that RFK had sought in 1968 as an icon of the progressive movement.
'We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise and national pride,' the siblings wrote.
'We believe in Harris and Walz. Our brother Bobby’s decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story,' they concluded.
The letter was signed by former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Chris Kennedy, and Rory Kennedy.
Five siblings of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. blasted his 'sad' decision to endorse Donald Trump
Kerry Kennedy, a human rights activist for a nonprofit named after her father, blasted out the statement on X, as politicos were sussing out whether the move might swing critical support to Trump.
RFK, Jr. had already formally removed his name from the ballot in Arizona, a critical battleground state where Trump has been holding a narrow lead in the polls.
The Harris campaign released its own statement after the news, notably not taking any shots, even after RFK, Jr.'s camp complained it couldn't get a meeting to try to negotiate with her.
Trump and his camp had openly floated the possibility that RFK, Jr. could land a job, despite his repeated attacks on Trump's handling of vaccines during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
'For any American out there who is tired of Donald Trump and looking for a new way forward, ours is a campaign for you. In order to deliver for working people and those who feel left behind, we need a leader who will fight for you, not just for themselves, and bring us together, not tear us apart. Vice President Harris wants to earn your support,' it said.
'Even if we do not agree on every issue, Kamala Harris knows there is more that unites us than divides us: respect for our rights, public safety, protecting our freedoms, and opportunity for all,' said the Harris campaign.
Harris, who delivered one of the biggest speeches of her life Thursday night, did not have scheduled public events following the convention, which according to the party helped raise millions and reintroduced the candidate to millions of Americans.
