Vice President Kamala Harris was put in charge of addressing the 'root causes' of migration that lead to people from Central America to flee to the U.S.
But after three-and-a-half years as President Joe Biden's 'border czar,' Republicans say that Harris has not done her job to quell the surging migration crisis at the southern border – and that policies have heightened the issue.
Sen. J.D. Vance says that the 'root cause' of the current crisis is Harris' failure to do her job.
Since Biden took office in 2021, Customs and Border Protection has encountered more than 8 million migrants along the southern border.
Harris was tasked with working with countries where a high concentration of these asylum seekers are coming from to figure out a way to make them not feel the need to flee.
Sen. J.D. Vance says Kamala Harris' failure as 'border czar' is the real 'root cause' of the illegal immigration crisis
Her first international trip as vice president was in June 2021 where she went to Guatemala and Mexico that led to the creation of task forces to combat corruption and human traffic. It also resulted in investment funding for housing and businesses in the region.
Republicans are highly critical of this approach, and claim that Harris did nothing to actually impact the number of migrants illegally crossing into the U.S.
Vance said he believes the Department of Homeland Security is actually underestimating the number of illegal immigrants.
'Whatever the real number is, it's way too high. It's millions upon millions of illegal immigrants that have come in just since Kamala Harris became the border czar a few years ago,' Vance told NBC News host Kristen Welker in an interview aired Sunday morning.
Welker attempted to clarify: 'She was put in charge of the root causes of migration.'
'Well, the root causes of migration, I would say, Kristen, is that Kamala Harris refuses to do her job as Border Czar,' he quipped.
Harris and Democrats at the National Convention in Chicago last week said the border can be secured while also allowing asylum seekers entry into the U.S.
More than 8 million migrants have illegally crossed or claimed asylum at the southern border since President Joe Biden took office and put VP Harris in charge of addressing the immigration crisis
Democrats have long leaned into the semantics of Harris' job addressing the border crisis and say that her role is to help Central American countries develop strategies for improving conditions so residents don't feel the need to leave and claim asylum in the U.S.
But Republicans say she was supposed to address the crisis at the border and has failed in doing decreasing illegal crossings.
Vance says the only way to successfully fix the illegal immigration crisis is to end Biden's presidency in January and allow Trump to reinstate his policies in a second term.
