The murder of a 27-year-old expectant mother become the subject of a Netflix true crime series American Murder: Laci Peterson.

Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant, disappeared from her home in Modesto, California, on Christmas Eve, 2002.

Tragically four months later the bodies of both Laci and her unborn son were found washed up on a shoreline.

Her husband Scott, now 51, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife and second-degree murder for the passing of their unborn son. However, Scott, who is serving a life sentence for murder,  has always maintained his innocence.

Now viewers have spotted a disturbing body language detail from Scott in the Netflix series about his trial.

Taking to Reddit, one viewer said they 'appalled' by Scott's facial expressions throughout the investigation and trial, saying he appeared to be constantly 'smiling'.

The post read: 'I am surprised that not enough has been said about Scott's facial expressions throughout the whole incident depicted in the documentary.

'He is constantly smiling and holding his head up high. I cannot even imagine how and why someone in his position wouldn't even bother 'faking it.'

'He seems completely indifferent and oblivious of his reality. I'm just so appalled and disgusted, wanted to vent here.'

Many rushed to the comments to agree saying they were 'creeped out' by his lack of emotion for his missing wife.

One person said: 'I'm soooo creeped out by the lack of any emotion in his face and body language. I think his brain should be scientifically looked into, he's a strong case of psychopathy. I think he has pretended his whole life as a normal human being.'

Another agreed saying: 'I hated hearing him talk. No emotion whatsoever.'

Someone else added: 'In the Peacock documentary that came out today, he has the weirdest smiles throughout. He is so psychotic he doesn't know how to have normal expressions.

'It's almost like someone told him to smile more because he looks guilty when he doesn't smile. It is truly creeping me out. A very weird and unnatural expression.'

Meanwhile a fourth added: 'It’s like he’s been trying to teach himself emotions for the last 20 years.'

Scott had been married to Laci for five years when she disappeared on December 24, 2002, after taking their dog for a walk.

Laci, 27, was eight months pregnant with their first child when she went missing. Her remains as well as the fetus of her unborn son - who the couple had named Conner - were found in different locations in the San Francisco Bay over three months later.

Laci's disappearance was first reported by her husband, who initially claimed he had been out golfing, when he returned to their Modesto, California home to find it empty and their dog running around the backyard dragging its leash.

However, Scott told his neighbour a different story, claiming he was fishing 90 miles away on his recently purchased boat out of Berkeley Marina.

He reported Laci missing to police and called his mother-in-law to tell her that his pregnant wife was nowhere to be found.

The mother and son's remains were discovered just one day apart in March 2003, over three months after Laci's disappearance, not far from where Scott said he was fishing.

Her head, neck, forearms and a portion of one leg were missing, according to reports.

And a pathologist testified at a preliminary hearing that the body’s exposure to saltwater and sea life left investigators unable to determine the cause of her death.

Scott had initially led the search for his wife but was arrested months later when her body washed up on the shoreline.

He has always claimed that she was killed by a panicked burglar after catching them ransacking the couple's home.

A jury however convicted him of the killing, deciding he was motivated by an affair he was having at the time with Amber Frey, a 20-year-old massage therapist who did not know he was married.

Scott was sentenced to death but the decision was overturned in 2020 by the California Supreme Court and he was instead sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Scott's request for a new trial was rejected in 2022.

Prosecutors told the court Scott wanted to escape married life and did not want the responsibility of becoming a father.

He argued he killed her at their Modesto home before dumping dumped her body - and that of the baby she was carrying - from his boat.

He was found guilty of the first degree murder of his wife and the second degree murder of their unborn child.

Some of Scott's family have echoed his claims of innocence. However his own sister branded him a 'sociopath.'

'I don't know why he did this,' she said in a previous interview with Dr Oz. 'Laci was the sweetest, kindest person, so I just don't understand it.'

'We miss her all the time. We've been robbed of her presence.

'His upbringing... I don't know if it had something to do with it. I'm not a doctor but I believe in sociopathy and I believe he's a sociopath.'

In a Peacock documentary, Face to Face with Scott Peterson, the now 51-year-old has spoken publicly for the first time since his 2003 arrest, maintaining his long-held belief that a group of burglars are responsible for his wife's death.

He told interviewer Shareen Anderson over video call from jail: 'There was a burglary across the street from our home. There was a lot of people involved. And I believe Laci went over there to see what was going on, and that’s when she was taken.'

Two men were arrested and pled guilty to the crime, but detectives on the case ruled out any link to Laci, believing the duo burgled the home two days after she vanished, on December 26.

Peterson, his family, and a contingent of his supporters have long argued police were too quick to rule out the burglars' involvement in Laci's disappearance.

One witness - who police have consistently said lacked credibility because details of her recollection varied - said she saw three men at the burgled home who did not match the physical appearances of the two men later convicted of the crime, Steven Todd and Donald Pearce.

She also said she saw a van parked out the front. Police said she initially thought the van was white, but later said it may have been tan or brown.

Peterson and his supporters argue that van could hold the key to Laci's death.

He said: 'Todd and Pearce, the two that we know burgled the house across the street. We don’t know who else was in that burglary. We know there were others.

'There was no desire to pursue the evidence that was in front of them. It was the evidence they just decided to ignore.'

Peterson's theory hinges on several key pieces of testimony which his team argues should have been further explored during the investigation.

This includes a witness who claims he reported seeing a pregnant woman being 'bundled into a van' on the day of Laci's disappearance, and a corrections officer who heard rumors in prison that she had confronted burglars in her neighbor's home.

But detectives immediately hit back, saying they had no specific recollection of the first report, and that the corrections officer 'recanted his statement' at the time.

The final piece of evidence, Peterson said, is a burnt-out van found a mile from their home the day after Laci's disappearance. Detectives at the time ruled out any links to the case.

'We want some DNA tests done, so we’ll be filing for that. We want further discovery, so we’ll be asking for that as well,' he said.
