New data has revealed the five worst and best states for online dating.

The data, pulled together by Privacy Journal, looked at factors including rates of romance scams and fraud, matches with registered sex offenders, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and even violent crime to determine how dangerous a state is for the average online dater.

The researchers weighted each factor depending on how important they were for online daters, and used the data to determine how bad or good a state was for online daters.

Privacy Journal found that Nevada was the worst state to date online, with a high rate per 100,000 people of fraud and romance scams.

Alaska was the second-most dangerous state for online dating. The Last Frontier somehow has a higher rate of STDs, sex offenders and violent crimes than Nevada, home to Las Vegas.

Georgia, Florida and Arizona were third, fourth and fifth worst respectively, each suffering deep problems across the board.

At the other end of the table, Vermont stood out as the best state for online daters.

The Green Mountain State, with the lowest per-capita rate of STDs and the second-lowest rate of identity theft, appeared to be heaven for online dating compared to Nevada.

Also high up the list was Maine, which took second place. The Pine Tree state has the lowest per-capita rate of violent crimes, though did fall short on romance scams, with the 16th highest rate in the US.

New Hampshire, Kentucky and Idaho were third, fourth and fifth best respectively.

Privacy Journal said of its data: 'Just because online dating is more dangerous in Nevada than it is in Vermont doesn’t mean that every Hinge match in Reno is preparing to scam or murder you.

'These results are meant to educate you on when to take appropriate precautions, especially in more dangerous states.'
