A mom has sparked backlash when she confessed that she named her daughter after a piece of furniture - and kept it a secret from her for 25 years.
The unnamed mother took to Reddit recently to explain how her daughter's unique moniker came about.
She noted that while pregnant at age 22, she decided to name her child 'Shaide,' after becoming inspired by the lamp next to her bed.
She kept the reason she gave Shaide the unique moniker a secret from her daughter for more than two decades.
But now, 25 years later, her daughter has discovered the true meaning behind her name and is furious with her mother.

On the Tragedeigh subreddit, the mom asked people on the web for advice as she questioned if she had 'made a mistake' with her child's name.
The post was titled: 'I think I messed up.'
In it she wrote: 'I feel like I made bad choices because I just told my daughter (25, [female]) how we came up with her name, and now she hates me.'
The mom then explained that the moniker was chosen when she was pregnant.
The anonymous mother added: 'When I was 22, her dad and I were laying in bed right after we found out we were having a girl.
'We were trying to think of names. I looked over at a lamp and jokingly said, "What about shade?" and for some reason, he loved it.
'It kind of stuck, so I name named her that, except I spelled it "Shaide." She now knows the story behind her name, as we never thought to really tell her. Did I make a mistake with this?'
People on the web flooded the comments section with their thoughts, and many slammed the mom for the moniker.

One person said: 'Way to throw Shaide at your own child lol.
'On a more serious note yes, you messed up, but since you commented that daughter dislikes being called [Shaide] and wants to change names, I feel like if you help with the costs/bureaucracy she may forgive you more easily.'
Another user added: 'Poor kid.'
'I think it’s a bit awful and [it] would’ve been better if [it was] just Shade. But would’ve been much better if you just picked a normal name,' someone else commented.
A different person wrote: 'Ooof you named your kid [after] a lamp shade? And then chose to misspell it? Double oof. I'd hate you too. That's seriously dumb.'
In the comments section, the mom insisted that she was not 'high' when she picked the name.
She noted that she was just 'pregnant and stupid.'
