Coco Gauff has revealed the one - very specific - reason she goes on Twitter after playing matches: to check what her fans thought of her outfit.

The New Balance-sponsored tennis superstar was once again in fine form at the US Open on Wednesday night, racing through the second round in a little over an hour.

In her press conference afterwards, a reporter asked about how she deals with abuse on social media, and Gauff revealed there's only one thing that takes her to Twitter.

'Twitter, I'm really not on,' she began. 'I only search one time after matches to see what people thought of my outfit. Oh and I did also search to see Naomi's [Osaka], cos I kept hearing about it but I didn't see it, and her outfit's great too.

'Instagram, I'll be on for 24 hours, so I'll be on until maybe the end of tomorrow and then I'll not be on it. Well, on my main account... I do have burners, so I don't see any of the tennis stuff.

'TikTok I'm on most of the time but I also do have a burner so I don't see any tennis. I'm on social media all the time, it's just whether I'm on my actual account or not.

'Twitter is the only one that I'm not on at all, because even with the burner the phone hears me speak and I don't know, my name comes up. I don't know if that's a real thing, but I believe in it.'

Abuse of sports stars on social media has become a huge issue over the past few years, and despite being massively popular Gauff is not immune to it.

She went on to open up about how she avoids seeing negativity online, while also spending a lot of her spare time scrolling through various social media platforms.

'You hear a lot of nasty things, people talk about your appearance, your family's appearance, and all these things,' she said. 'If you're already struggling with your own mental issues and then on top of that you have all these people digging deeper, it is tough.

'Personally, I just block... I'll literally spend 30 minutes just blocking all the people, I really don't care.

'I noticed a small thing on Twitter because I was blocking so many people, they were like, "you say anything, she blocks". Yes, I do. I don't want to see it, so bye!

'I don't really care, I'm not entitled to read negative things about myself. Just like you're entitled to write it, I'm entitled to block it. I just try not to read it as much or take it personal.

'I hope as technology increases, AI can help. You can be having a good day and then somebody will literally tell you, "go kill yourself." And you're like, "okay, thanks." It sucks. Hopefully the AI stuff can help in the future.'

After her second-round victory over Tatjana Maria, the American No 3 seed will go on to face a tougher test in Elina Svitolina in the third round on Friday.
