A murder suspect who was on the run for months has been caught in Memphis, Tennessee, after he fell through the ceiling from his hiding place in a family's attic.

A warrant for the arrest of Deario Wilkerson, 20, was issued back in April in connection with the death of Troy Cunningham in Memphis.

But he spent months evading police, who eventually managed to track him down to the home of a family member.

As cops entered the home, Wilkerson tried hiding in the attic. But, according to the New York Times, officers heard 'loud sounds from the home' followed by a 'loud crash.'

Photos shared by officers showed a large gaping hole in the ceiling, with fragments of plaster and dust covering the floor below.

'Mr. Wilkerson was not injured from the fall and was taken into custody with no further incident,' the Marshals Service said of the arrest, which took less than 10 minutes.

He is now being held in the city's Shelby County Jail on a $6million bail.

Wilkerson is one of three people charged in the shooting of Cunningham, who was found dead on April 2 in the city's Hollywood neighbourhood.

According to a local District Attorney, cops investigating an incident in the area heard multiple gunshots, and found Cunningham  the sidewalk near Peres and Merton Street, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head.

On top of this, bullets hit a car two women were in, with one of them sustaining a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The alleged killer was charged with first degree murder.
