A 55-year-old driver was killed by an angry mob of motorcyclists after he allegedly abandoned the scene of an accident in the northern Brazil city of Manaus.

Jones Lopes was traveling on a road on the eastern neighborhood of Armando Mendes when he ran over a delivery man on motorcycle early Wednesday morning.

Instead of checking on the man's well-being, Lopes sped away, the Amazonas Civil Police said.

The delivery man alerted other motorcyclists in the area, who helped him chase Lopes down in the neighborhood of Tancredo Neves.

Dramatic video footage recorded by a motorist showed the bikers dragging Lopes out of his car and brutally attacked him.

Lopes was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched on the head as he laid motionless.

A second video recording captured the moment one of the individuals slammed a brick over his head.

The angry mob destroyed Lopes' vehicle, flipping it over and smashing a brick over the windshield before they fled.

Ricardo Cunha, who is the chief of the Manaus Civil Police Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Unit, made a desperate plea for help in identifying and locating the individuals who attacked Lopes.

'Today I am asking the public to bring information about the whereabouts and identification of the motorcyclists who lynched Mr. Jones Mota,' Cunha said. 'Mr. Jones was killed in a cowardly and cruel manner in a traffic dispute here in Manaus, on Autaz Mirim Avenue. We ask that any information pertinent to the case, in order to identify these people and their whereabouts.'

The Amazonas Delivery Workers Union Leadership condemned the attack in a statement.

'The class is mostly made up of hard-working and honest people, and this type of action deserves total repudiation!' it said.

Jones leaves behind a wife and three children - a 39-year-old son and a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy.

His youngest child learned of the gruesome death after watching the video on the news.

'My brother was a good man, he didn't deserve this,' Jones' brother told the AM Post. 'We ask that anyone who has any clues about these criminals help us. We want justice.'

Jones' former daughter-in-law, Carmen Rego, told Cenarium Magazine that he may have fled the scene because he was scared.

'He would never do it out of malice, but he found himself in such a cornered moment, when he saw in the rearview mirror how many people were behind him,' she said. 'It's not that he didn't want to provide help, he was afraid that exactly what happened would happen.'
