A furious Floridan blogger has slammed her son's school for setting her first grader up with a heavy amount of homework.

Cassi Nelson posted a sad picture of her son on Facebook, in which the toddler is shown distraught and holding back tears, while attempting to finish his homework in the kitchen.

The concerned mother shared that her little one, named Phoenix, had to complete 'four pages' of homework after concluding only his 'second day of first grade.'

In the moving post, which got more than 21,000 reactions, the furious mother explained: 'He already doesn’t get home from school until 4p.m. Then he had to sit still for another hour plus, to complete more work.

'I had to clear out the kitchen so he could focus. His little legs kept bouncing up and down. He was bursting with so much energy - just wanting to go play.'

Cassi transparently continued in his post: 'Then he broke my heart when he looked up at me with his big teary doe eyes and asked: "Mommy when you were little, did you get distracted a lot too?!"

"Yes sweet baby - mommy sure did too."

'I don’t know how people expect little children to sit at school all day long, and then ALSO come home to sit, and do MORE work too…

'It’s been tested and proven time and time again that homework is actually highly unnecessary, and actually hurts children more than it helps…'

She added: 'If this little guy's face doesn’t confirm that for you, then idk what would.

'If we [can] do anything in this cancel culture, can we please cancel so much unnecessary homework? Especially for the younger kids.

'It’s breaking their spirit, and it robs them of what little fun and family time they have when they come home after a long day of school.'

Many parents strongly emphasized with the mother.

One person wrote: 'He shouldn’t be having homework [in] first grade, and if he does, then it needs to be very, very little. This is upsetting.'

A second person commented: 'Poor little man. Children below a certain grade should not be given homework! Small children have a hard time sitting still for a long period of time, yet alone [be] expected to sit and do hours of homework - for what???

'They are SMALL CHILDREN! Let them snack, play, laugh, and all the other fun things when they get home. You are only a child once. They don't need that taken away from them. Let them embrace their inner creativity, imagination, recipes, etc;.'

A third person added: 'This breaks my spirit. Our schools are huge scams. You're exactly right Cassi. Homework is ridiculous.

'Kids till the age of 10 primarily learn through real-life situations and play scenarios. It's just awful. I wish all public schools naturally took a Montessori approach.'

A fourth person wrote: 'I know it girl. Breaks my heart. I don’t agree with most homework. Kids are already at school for up to eight hours.

'If they can’t get it done in that time, save it for the next day. All it’s teaching kids, is to take work home as adults, and that it's "ok." I disagree.'

A fifth person commented: 'Ya, that’s not ok for first grade. Poor guy - these kids aren’t meant to spend all day at school and at night.

'How can home school kids get everything done that they need to learn in four to five hours, and then we send our kids to school, and seven hours isn’t enough? That’s wild.'

Some parents explained that seeing their own child just as saddened, made them switch to 'homeschooling'

One person wrote: 'This is so sad. This is one of many reasons I'll be homeschooling. Kids don't need to sit still and focus all day, in and out of school. It is ridiculous that anything was sent home.'

A second person commented: 'One of the many reasons we are homeschooling.'

A third person added: 'That's why I just started homeschool.'

Several teachers chimed into the conversation with their professional take.

One person wrote: 'I don’t send homework home with my students. Eight-hours-a-day is enough for little minds to be going. They need and deserve a break.'

A second person added: 'As a second grade teacher, I don’t believe in sending homework home.

'I do send a reading log home, and ask that they complete an hour of reading for the entire month, but I understand they are just kids and need to be kids!

'Poor baby!! I remember when I was in first grade, [and] I came home with two to three hours of homework and I had dance. I literally never had a minute to be a kid and just play. This is why I don’t send home the busy work.'

Cassi has decided to homeschool both of her kids - Valkyrie and Phoenix. She shared an update about her homeschooling journey on Facebook and said: 'Not every kid fits inside the "normal" box for a traditional school AND THATS OK'
She added: 'It¿s up to us as their parents to figure out a different learning route that¿s better suited for them'

She shared an update about her homeschooling journey on Facebook and said: 'Not every kid fits inside the "normal" box for a traditional school AND THATS OK!!

'It’s up to us as their parents to figure out a different learning route that’s better suited for them.

'Just like not one job is for every person, not one way of school is for every child either.

'Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to take this leap of faith. Y'all weren’t lying when you said it’s not hard!

'And I appreciate y'all more than I can ever say for guiding me in all the right directions for our littles.'

According to the National Education Association, it is recommended that teachers follow a '10-minute rule,' which entails that students should not do more than 10 minutes of homework nightly, per their grade level.
