A content creator has revealed that she doesn't buy bottled water that has been sitting in the sun.
Chicago nanny Kayle, who has not revealed her last name, has shared a short TikTok, in which she showed stacks of bottled water being sold for $6.99, outside a gas station.
In her video regarding the 24-packs, she warned viewers: 'I may be crazy, but I hope no one is buying this water. Reason being - the sun shines all day on this plastic. Don’t drink water that sits outside.'
The influencer, who captioned her video, 'drinking plastic much,' inspired an important online conversation - is bottled water that's been sitting in the sun, safe to drink?
Lead researcher, Huase Ou, who is behind the Eco-Environment & Health's study, has shared: 'Our findings provide compelling evidence that plastic bottles, when exposed to sunlight, can release toxic compounds that pose health risks.'

China's Jinan University scientists analyzed six types of plastic bottles that were sourced from Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Japan and China for their research.

The study included different kinds of water, such as spring water, distilled water and artesian water, and the effects of sunlight and UVA radiation on each.
The scientists discovered that the water bottles emitted chemicals such as a highly toxic, as well as cancer-causing chemical, called n-Hexadecane and other carcinogens.
According to the National Library of Medicine, n-Hexadecane, which goes by H304, is labeled as a 'dangerous aspiration hazard,' and 'may be fatal if swallowed, and [if it] enters airways.'
Huase warned: 'Consumers need to be aware of these risks, especially in environments where bottled water is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.'
The director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute, Dr. Kellogg Schwab, has shared with Time: 'A chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA, along with other things used to manufacture plastic, can leach into your water if the bottle heats up, or sits in the sun.'
These toxic chemicals have also been linked to causing heart disease and cancer.

Although the scientists behind the study wouldn't recommend drinking the bottled water that has been sitting in the sun as your go-to, they also mentioned that the 'potential health risks' of doing so seem small.
The researchers added: 'Considering the small mass of a single bottle, the volatilization of [these potentially toxic compounds] from an individual container would be insignificant.
'Even after prolonged exposure to light, the potential health risks associated with inhaling [toxic chemicals], when opening and drinking bottled water, appear manageable.'
