For a number of years now, animal rights activists have slammed countries such as Russia and China for their daily torment of circus animals.

From being whipped and made to dance or hop over objects to even being electrocuted, there are a range of methods tamers use to degrade apex predators -so it's no surprise that sometimes performing animals lash out.

Earlier this week, a hoverboard-riding circus bear could be seen attacking a trainer in front of hundreds of watching children and parents in Russia.

The circus performer struggled to break free as the angry brown bear named Donut - weighing 35 stone - gnawed the stick he held in his hand to control her.

In 2019, costumed bears were forced to dance and perform leap-frogs in front of shocked tourists too frightened to complain at a North Korean circus.

Here MailOnline looks at some of the worst examples of raging animals turning on their handlers - who somehow lived to tell the tale.

Earlier this year, a circus bear attacked its trainer in front of screaming children after he forcefully made the animal perform.

The roller-skating bear, a female called Dzhema, was being forced to perform tricks at the ironically named 'Happiness Show' at Mash Circus, Obnisk, Russia, on June 1.

Shocking footage captured by an audience member shows Dzhema leaping towards her cruel trainer while his back is to her.

Seeking her revenge, the bear charges towards Krasov until she strikes him, dragging him down onto the ground as he struggles to control the predator.

At a circus in Zaporizhzhia city a performing brown bear suddenly staged a furious attack on a trainer in front of spectators.

The trainer had fed the bear a 'treat' before the beast turned on him.

Footage from an onlooker caught the moment the brown creature jumped up on its hind legs and lunged towards the handler in the shock attack.

The bear tore the man's shirt with its claws, leaving gaping holes in the material as the trainer fought to get the animal under control.

Last year, a lion suddenly flipped and attacked his circus tamer as the audience screamed during the performance in China.

Shocking footage shows the dangerous stand-off between two lions and their tamer on a caged circus stage in Dongning City in northern China during a performance.

The tamer managed to escape the lion's grasp and the video showed him running to the opposite site of the cage with the lions on his heels.

A raging performing bear attacked a circus ringmaster in front of a large crowd of children and their parents.

The beast suddenly became agitated before going into the ring to show its tricks in Russian city Blagoveshchensk.

There were gasps from the audience as the ringmaster and a tamer struggled to control the brown bear, yanking its leash to force it to obey, as it tried to escape.

One is heard shouting: 'What's wrong? Damn.'
