A woman who found out her husband of nearly two decades was secretly married to someone else after he died - which meant she might have to give up her house to his first wife - has lifted the lid on how she uncovered his immense web of lies.

When Laurinel Owen, now 68, walked down the aisle with Klaus, an Oxford-trained PHD nuclear physicist and divorced father-of-two who was 17 years her senior, in 1991, she thought she had gotten her happily ever after.

For 18 years, she and her husband, whose name was changed for privacy reasons, lived a quiet and happy life together in Long Island, New York.

But after he passed away in 2009, Laurinel's whole world was turned upside down after she uncovered a slew of horrific secrets that her husband had kept from her.

She found a vulgar porn stash hidden in his closet, and unearthed a horrific connection that his family had to the Nazi party.

But the biggest revelation of all? He had been married to another woman throughout the entire course of their relationship.

This meant their marriage was not legal and that she was no longer a beneficiary in his will - and the other woman had the rights to half his belongings, including Laurinel's house and savings.

On top of grappling with the realization that her husband was not who he said he was, Laurinel was now at risk of losing her home and all the money they had worked hard for.

She became embroiled in a lengthy years-long court battle against his wife, as her mental health deteriorated.

Now, Laurinel - who recently released a book on the devastating ordeal, called Strings Attached: A Memoir of Betrayal, Bigamy, and Self-Discovery - has spoken exclusively to DailyMail.com about it.

Laurinel met Klaus in 1981, when she was a young, budding cellist who had just moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, after landing a spot in The National Symphony Orchestra.

The musician, then 24, recalled looking out at the audience and noticing the same  man attending her performances 'week after week.'

'Me and my [stage] partner, who was also a young woman, would always check out the guys in the audience,' she explained.

'And there he was. He was all by himself. Always. Week after week after week.'

Laurinel said she and Klaus eventually met up and they hit it off right away.

They started dating soon after - and looking back, she said there were no 'red flags' in those early, whirlwind months of their relationship.

'We spent so much time together. He was an Oxford-trained PHD nuclear physicist. You don't expect those kinds of people to be such superb liars,' she explained.

'I thought, "This is the guy of my dreams." He was everything I ever wanted in a partner. I was totally head over heels in love.'

After one year together, Klaus - who told her he was a divorced father-of-two - asked Laurinel to marry him, and convinced she had found her soulmate, she said yes.

He then invited her to join him on a family vacation on the coast of South Africa so that she could meet his kids - a trip that would completely 'shatter' their picture-perfect romance.

Upon arriving on the glamorous getaway, a woman opened the door - and she introduced herself as Klaus' wife.

'I was like a deer in headlights. Everything I had come to [know] was suddenly shattered,' Laurinel recalled to DailyMail.com.

Laurinel explained that when she confronted Klaus about it as soon as they got a moment alone, he insisted that he 'never loved' his wife.

She added that he told her 'all sorts of stories' about how 'bad' his marriage had been, which left her 'feeling sorry' for him.

'His reaction was absolutely calm,' she reflected. 'He told me not to worry. I was filled with disbelief.

'Like, "How could this be happening to me?" But I was so young and naïve. I wanted to believe everything he said. I just didn't have the wisdom or experience.

'He had totally [manipulated me]... He told me all sorts of stories, as I'm sure many men who are good liars do.'

Despite the horrific discovery that her boyfriend had been lying to both her and his wife, Laurinel decided to stay with him.

'I was desperately in love. Looking back on it now, it was my insecurity that without him I was nobody,' she added.

Over the course of the next few months, Klaus continuously fed Laurinel lies, telling her that he was in the process of divorcing his wife but making excuse after excuse as to why it was taking so long to be finalized.

'No matter how many times I asked him what was happening he'd come up with some [excuse or] promise,' she continued.

'He'd say the divorce courts are only opened on Tuesdays every other week so he was just waiting.

'Then the date would come and his attorney was sick. He always had some sort of reason.'

Finally, she said she got 'so fed up' that she decided to leave Klaus, quit her job, and move back to the US, telling him, 'Find me when you're divorced.'

Nine months later, in May 1987, Klaus came to see Laurinel in America, and he insisted that he had officially split from his wife.

'I wouldn't have come if I wasn't divorced. This subject is too painful, so don't ever ask again,' she said he told her.

Finally, Laurinel thought she had gotten her much-deserved happily ever after, telling DailyMail.com, 'It finally felt like he chose me.'

They walked down the aisle in 1991, and for 18 years, they had what appeared to be a perfect marriage.

But after he passed away in 2009, she uncovered layers of lies that left her wondering: Who really was the man she married?

First, Laurinel discovered that Klaus' father was a Nazi murderer who 'laundered money for Hitler' from the US.

He ultimately fled America after the FBI began to suspect that he was the 'head of the American Gestapo,' per newspaper clippings from the 1930s that she got from her local library.

In addition, she found a box full of 'pornographic articles' in his closet, which included one about 'the libidinous effect of urinating on the opposite sex.'

She also unearthed a 'weird' book he had been writing that was filled with 'sex exploits' he wrote in which he painted himself as a 'hero.'

'He was writing a novel that was going to have his best physics ideas because he said they were so advanced, the physics community couldn't accept them,' Laurinel said.

'So he was going to write a mystery and include these ideas in it. But I found it and it was just a compilation of sex scenes and exploits with himself being the hero. Pretty weird.'

But the biggest shock came after the funeral, when Klaus' daughter broke the news that he had never actually divorced his first wife.

Laurinel recalled of hearing the news: 'It was total betrayal. My first reaction was, "Who is this guy that I spent 27 years with?"

'My second thought was, "Who was I that I didn't see this and put up with all this?" There was an awful lot of shame and guilt.

'I don't want to go down that rabbit hole because I've done so much work to pull myself out of it but it made me feel awfully useless.'

Laurinel explained that over the course of their nearly two-decade marriage, she paid for pretty much everything, while Klaus put almost all of his earnings into a retirement fund.

But now, she was told she may never see any of the money, and that his first wife might get it instead.

Klaus still being married to someone else also meant that the other woman was now entitled to half of his belongings - which included their home.

She fought hard in court for years, and eventually 'settled' with Klaus' wife, but she said the ordeal left her 'spiraling.'

'You can't even imagine what I had to go through in order to prove I had been paying expenses along the way. I had to prove everything,' she shared.

'And I kept finding so many of his financial infidelities. I was in such a state of anxiety, constant anxiety.

'I couldn't bear it. I couldn't get over it. I didn't even have a chance to grieve.'

Finally, she realized she 'needed help' and started therapy, which, despite 'taking a long time,' helped her heal.

Laurinel now believes that she 'needed to go through it in order to grow,' and she hopes that by speaking out about it, she can help others.

'That's the reason I ended up writing this book,' she continued. 'A lot of people are being betrayed and I want people to know there's others out there.

'I want to support others who have been really badly betrayed and are feeling traumatized.'

As for why she thinks Klaus did what he did, she said she'll never understand it, but added, 'If he hadn't died, I would have killed him.'
