A family of four were brutally murdered in their upstate New York home in scenes so gruesome, veteran cops were left shaken by what they found.

Irondequoit Police said they uncovered the bodies of two parents, a four-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy in a burned-up house in the early hours of Saturday.

They were identified as Fraime Ubaldo, 30, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26, Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno.

Police are searching for the killer and arsonist who seemingly wanted to raze the evidence by attempting to burn down the home on Knapp Avenue in the leafy town close to Lake Ontario and the US-Canada border.

Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters, who has worked in law enforcement for 32 years, was visibly shaken at a press conference as he described the scene as 'the worst thing I've ever seen' while vowing to 'bring these monsters to justice'.

The department did not disclose how the murderer killed the family of four, but said it was 'readily apparent this was going to be a homicide investigation' due to the 'condition of the bodies'.

'Due to the nature of the scene, our processing took almost two full days,' Irondequoit Police said in a release.

The department said firefighters were the first to be called to the scene at around 5:23 am on Saturday as the 911 caller reported the blaze.

Police responded to the call along with the fire service, who brought the inferno under control before cops went inside and made the gruesome discovery.

They confirmed that Ubaldo and Moreno-Santiago were the parents of the two children found with them.

Peters said his department would not rest until their killer is brought to justice.

'These kids deserve it. They had a whole life in front of them,' he told the press conference.

Irondequoit Town Supervisor Andrae Evans said in a statement that the town is 'profoundly heartbroken by the recent horrific tragedy that has shaken our community'.

'Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and neighbors affected by this senseless act of violence,' he added.

'We are appalled and sickened by these evil actions. This act of violence is completely contrary to the values of our safe, caring, and inclusive community.'

Evans said he has empowered the police department to 'utilize every legal measure available to bring those responsible for this heinous crime to justice as swiftly as possible'.

The children's mother, Moreno-Santiago, was remembered as a 'sweet and loving person' who 'would go above and beyond for her children' by a heartbroken friend who paid tribute on Facebook.

She shared a GoFundMe page to raise money for the funerals and burial of the family.
