Heart-stopping footage has captured a Pepsi van driver's brush with death as he narrowly escaped being hit by a Virginia coal train.

Tommy Cobbs, 53, is reported to be the driver of the Pepsi van who came within inches of being obliterated by a speeding train in a heart-stopping incident caught on camera.

The nerve-wracking moment occurred at a railway crossing near US Highway 58 in South Boston, Virginia, on July 13 at around 7:17am, according to Virginia State Police.

Train enthusiast Bob Brown was filming the crossing gate as a coal train approached when he witnessed the near-death experience.

His video, which has since gone viral with over 30,000 views on Facebook, shows the Pepsi van heading toward the train track crossing.

As the van drives towards the crossing, he slams on the brakes - bumping into the gate's arm.

The driver then reverses slightly, bending the gate backward, before inexplicably deciding to cross the tracks just as the train plows through.

Just a matter of seconds later, the driver would have been crushed by the incoming train but he is able to drive through unharmed.

Brown posted the video on Facebook with the caption, 'PLEASE DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THIS. Because of the grace of God this man was not injured ( or worse) nor was the train crew).'

'The van was bent up some. See flashing lights think TRAIN. See crossing gates coming down think TRAIN Hear horn blowing think TRAIN,' he added.

Brown told YourGV.com: 'I had set up that morning with my video camera looking up the track because I had heard on the scanner that a train was coming from the Hyco Power Plant.'

'Based on the speed of the train and the speed of the van, I thought we were going to see crumpled metal or worse, but he made it,' he added.

The video was flooded with comments with users expressing relief that the man avoided what could have been a deadly accident.

'Thankful that everyone is okay!!! Any later and this would have been really bad!' one said.

Another user warned, 'That Pepsi man was almost toast! Wow.'

'I would suggest that everyone pray for this guy because he is probably without a job right now,' a third user commented.

According to the police, Cobbs, who was operating a 2018 Ford Transit when he struck a railroad crossing gate, was not injured.
