Montreal Canadiens star forward Cole Caufield penned an emotional tribute to Johnny Gaudreau, the hockey player killed by a drunk driver last Thursday evening.

The 31-year-old Gaudreau, who previously spent nine seasons with Calgary, and his younger brother Matthew, 29, died last Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while out cycling in New Jersey the night before their sister Katie's wedding.

The driver, 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins of Woodstown, has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide with no bail or bond and is alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Caufield posted a tribute to Gaudreau on Instagram and in the process revealed that he'd be changing his number from 22 to 13 in honor of Johnny.

'We all lost an amazing person, both on and off the ice, in last week’s tragedy,' Caufield posted on his Instagram page.

'My deepest condolences go to the entire Gaudreau family, especially Johnny’s wife and two kids, who I had the pleasure of meeting.

'Nothing will be able to fill the void in their families and loved ones hearts, but I hope it provides some comfort to know how these two positively impacted the lives of so many. They will truly be missed.

'Getting to play with your hero is something that most people only dream of. I was lucky enough to be Johnny’s teammate this past summer and it didn’t take long to realize how great of a person he was.

'He was the most welcoming, genuine, and funniest guy I have ever met. He was someone everyone gravitated towards and I took every chance I could to be around him.

'Not only was he an amazing hockey player and teammate, but he was down to earth and truly cared about every person he encountered.

'The last few years playing as #22 have been some of the best years of my life. It truly has been a dream come true and I will forever hold those memories and that number close to me.

'I wore #13 at a point in my career because of Johnny and now I will be wearing it again to honor him. He paved the way for smaller players and proved we had a future in this game at the highest level.

'I will forever be grateful to him for inspiring me and others. Rest in Peace, Johnny hockey.'

In documents seen by DailyMail.com, alleged drunk-driver Higgins admitted to cops that he drank '5-6 beers' before getting behind the wheel of his Jeep Grand Cherokee and crashing into the Gaudreau brothers.

The crash happened less than three miles from the Gaudreau family home, hours before Katie was due to marry partner Devin Joyce.

Tributes to both Gaudreau brothers have been pouring in throughout the weekend as the hockey world continues to deal with the tragedy.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Matthew Gaudreau's wife Madeline to help support her and her growing child, Tripp.

The fund's goal of $30,000 has been blown past to over $575,000 raised as of the time of publication.

A number of athletes and hockey stars have donated - with a $10,000 donation from the Koepka family joining funds from the likes of Artemi Panarin's wife Alisa, Matt Duchene, Keith Yandle, and Jared Spurgeon among others.
