The Masters 2025 Day Two RECAP: Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler make charges but Justin Rose is still sitting pretty

This concludes the Daily Mail's live coverage of the second round of The Masters. Below is one of our stories from today on John Daly.

Tyrrell Hatton will go into Saturday three strokes behind leader Justin Rose, after shooting a 70 on Friday and standing at five-under-par.

What an eventful back 9 for Scottie Scheffler, who finishes his second round with a bogey to put him at five-under-par, three strokes off the lead heading into Saturday.

After being only one stroke behind Justin Rose two holes ago, back-to-back bogeys have sent Tyrrell Hatton to five-under-par with one hole left in his round.

Collin Morikawa finishes his day with a bogey on 18, sending him to the clubhouse at three-under-par, five shots off the lead.

As Tyrrell Hatton soars, Scottie Scheffler bogeys on 16, as he stands on five-under-par.

Tyrrell Hatton with another birdie on hole 15 to put him in a tie for second place with Bryson DeChambeau, and one stroke behind Justin Rose.

Collin Morikawa is now at 4-under-par after another birdie on hole 17, putting him squarely in the mix for the rest of the Masters.

Collin Morikawa makes an impressive birdie on 16 to improved to 3-under-par.

Scottie Scheffler's back 9 is turning into the the story of the tournament, after two epic saves on 12 and 13, and a birdie on 14.

Tyrrell Hatton nearly made an eagle putt and left an easy tap-in for a birdie to bring him to -6 with five holes to go in his second round.

For the second straight hole, Scottie Scheffler avoided disaster, this time, with a clutch par putt. Remember the last two holes if the finish is close on Sunday.

Bernhard Langer was thanked by his fellow players and was teary-eyed as he walked off hole No 18, with his famly waiting nearby.

Bernhard Langer barely will miss the cut at the Masters at 67, which would have set the record for the oldest person to ever play all four rounds after a bogey on the final hole.

After a par on hole No 17, Bernhard Langer needs a par or better to make the cut at Augusta. If its a bogey or lower, his Masters' days are forever done.

After mising the green on his tee shot, Scottie Scheffler made a phenomenal recovery to birdie on hole No 12 to improve to -5

The English LIV rebel goes birdie-birdie-birdie on holes seven, eight, and nine to move up to six-under and the tie for third.

As Scottie tees off on 10 to begin his second nine, the reigning champion will have plenty of chances to make up the two strokes separating him from the lead.

On the first nine, he snagged three birdies and a bogey to stay within range.

Forecasts said there was a slight chance of rain starting about now, but the rainclouds have stayed away.

Wind is absolutely playing a factor, but the course is holding strong.

With a majority of the leaders having just wrapped their rounds, these are where things stand:

While the cut line keeps bouncing between +1 and +2, these golfers are definitively out of the tournament. We'll continue to update as they go:

A very solid showing from the LIV Golf rebel as he only manages a single bogey and five birdies on the day.

He's a stroke ahead of McIlroy and a stroke behind Rose - a perfect spot to stay competitive through the weekend.

Throughout the day, the projected cut line has flipped back and forth between +1 and +2.

So the American, who shot four-over on the day, will head into the clubhouse with a bundle of nerves.

An amazing day for the Irishman after shooting even par the day prior.

Now, he's in contention going into the final two days of the tournament as he chases an elusive green jacket.

The big man bounces straight back from his bogey on 16 to birdie 17 and climb to outright second once again. One hole to play, and a chance to join Rose with the clubhouse lead if he can find another birdie.

Has struggled for form in recent months... but is back with a bang this weekend:

Here comes the world No 1 Scheffler, sinking a birdie putt on 6 to move two-under for the day and T2 for the tournament on -6. He joins McIlroy, DeChambeau and go two back from Rose's lead.

Some bad news for fans of DeChambeau, who's just had the first blot on his scorecard out on 16. Until that point it was four birdies and 11 pars for the day, but a three-putt has put paid to a bogey-free round.

He drops back from outright 2nd to join a group including Rory McIlroy on -6.

Good news for Justin Rose in the clubhouse too, whose lead has just extended back to two shots.

...for Collin Morikawa on 6 and 7. He's hotting up, heading onto the easiest hole on the course. Still T25 overall, but going in the right direction.

As reported by Mail Sport yesterday, ex-baseball star Ken Griffey Jr is hard at work at Augusta this week, working as a photographer.

He was spotted out on the course on Friday (center), chatting with NFL legend Ryan Fitzpatrick (left) and a patron.

And after a bogey on 5, he's the wrong side of it. Currently, anyone worse off than +2 is going home, and Phil Mickelson is +3. Long way to go yet, but it's not looking great for the LIV star.

A bogey on the 18th to slightly taint an incredible day at Augusta for Rasmus Hojgaard. He cards a five-under-par 67 to leave himself tied for 10th in the tournament, and he'll be playing this weekend.

The same can't be said for his brother Nicolai, who is T82 and +7 on the leaderboard.

How's that for a star-studded top nine?

Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland are both well and truly on the march, birdieing 15 and 16 respectively to move to -6 for the tournament, and tied-3rd on the leaderboard.

Hovland has flown under the radar a little (he's not among the featured groups, you see) but he's just birdied four holes in a row to fly up the leaderboard.

Left himself in a bit of trouble with his approach on the 5th, and then got stuck in the mud with a horror birdie putt that only made it about halfway to the hole.

From there, though, he holed a long one to save par, and that'll settle the nerves after a difficult start. He's +1 for the day, and for the tournament. The cut looms large just below him.

Shane Lowry is well and truly on the march. On the 14th, he's just birdied another - his 5th of the day - to move to five-under and T3 on the leaderboard.

This is where the problems started for him yesterday, the first of his two double bogeys to send his round spiraling out of control.

This time around, he's taken slightly safer passage, landing his approach on the green... and he'll have a putt for eagle to close in on Justin Rose and the lead. Here we go!

It's been a tough day for Bhatia, but this amazing chip in birdie on 14 brings his round to +2 on the day.

Rose couldn't quite find consistent scoring out on the course today, which could really come back to haunt him in later rounds.

Considering conditions are about to start turning at Augusta, if the Englishman could have erased one of his three bogeys he may be in a much better position for Saturday.

Regardless, Rose didn't make many mistakes that seriously harmed him as he went one-under for the day and sits at eight-under for the tournament.

Justin Rose finishes his day at one-under. That's a great window of opportunity for Rory, Scottie or whoever to take advantage of.

A massive putt on 13 sees him end his time on Amen Corner going birdie, par, eagle.

He's now five under for the day.

ESPN is projecting that it's back to two-over, trimming the field down to 60.

As things stand right now, players like Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Will Zalatoris, and Keegan Bradley are safe. It also means Bernhard Langer would set the record as the oldest player to make a cut.

On the wrong side of the projected cut are exactly three players at the moment: Russell Henley, Phil Mickelson, and Tony Finau (who is teeing off now).

After going back to a two shot advantage over DeChambeau, Rose's second shot goes right into the front right greenside bunker.

He gets out to 17 feet and rolls his par putt to less than a foot from the cup. He taps in for bogey, dropping back down to eight-under.

As we were updating the leaderboard, Rose sank a birdie putt on the par-3 16th hole to go back to nine-under.

With two holes left in his round, he should walk into the clubhouse comfortable.

The final groups are about to tee off for the day with the weather expected to start changing in the coming hours.

Ugh, so close.

He had a seven foot putt for par, but missed it leaving a two-foot tap in for bogey.

But what an amazing day for him, considering how it started out. McCarty finishes four-under for the day, five-under for the tournament and heads to the clubhouse in a tie for fourth.

A beautiful birdie shot at the 11th sees the Irishman shoot up to three-under and a tie for ninth!

He's three-under for the day and could set up something great in the coming days if he can finish this out.

The LIV Golf rebel is off to a hot start at four-under on the day, let's see if he can keep it up on the second nine.

Meanwhile, Im birdied the 12th and is about to hit his last hole on Amen Corner.

An amazing first nine for Sungjae!

He hits the turn birdieing the eighth and ninth to shoot four-under on the day and five-under on the tournament.

Midway through Amen Corner, Rose hits a great shot over the creek and rolls an easy putt in for a birdie to go to nine-under.

He goes into Amen Corner and goes par-birdie-birdie to move to four-under through the tournament and three-under for the day!

The lefty hits a great tee shot on the infamous 12th hole that lands feet of the left side pin location and he rolls in for an easy birdie.

Then on 13, rather than go for the green in two shots, McCarthy settled for a shot that didn't challenge Rae's Creek and left a 45 yard pitch over the water. He gets on with eight feet to spare and rolls in another birdie putt.

Im played the par-5 eighth smart, choosing to lay-up short of the right side bunkers on his tee shot.

His second shot left a 70-ish yard pitch onto the green that stopped 10 feet of the hole.

The South Korean rolled his birdie putt in to move into a tie with Aberg and the yet-to-play Conners and Scheffler.

On the par-3 sixth, Aberg's tee shot ended up off the green.

His putt for par rolled two feet past the cup and he tapped in for an unfortunate bogey to fall two shots behind DeChambeau.

The American drove the ball 359 yards on the par-4 fifth hole and then stuck his 160 yard approach shot to eight feet.

His putt rolled in for a birdie and he now has second all for himself as he moves past Ludvig Aberg.

Augusta National has plenty of Masters-specific merch that you can purchase if attending.

But one fan went absolutely overboard with their shopping spree.

This is an incredible shot out of the sand that has to be seen to be believed!

On the par-5 eighth hole, Rose smoked his drive and his second shot to get close to the green.

His pitch shot was stuck five feet from the hole and he cleaned it up for a birdie.

Rose now sits at eight-under, three shots ahead of the next closest golfers.

ESPN is now projecting the cut line has moved from +2 to +1, reducing the projected Day 3 field from 63 golfers to 51 golfers.

Simply put, it doesn't look good for the chances of any of them to make the cut.

Evan Beck, Noah Kent, and Justin Hastings are all at least four strokes below the line. Beck is the only one of those three who has started... and he's three-over for the round.

Jose Luis Ballester, who will play with Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler again today, is two shots below the cut line.

Finally, we have Hiroshi Tai. He started the day at one-over and had the best chance of surviving. But through nine holes, he's two-over and sits below the cut.

As we highlighted earlier, McCarty started one-under going into the day but dropped down to two-over and in danger of falling below the cut line.

He responded with a stunning four consecutive birdies to round out the first nine to not only avoid the cut but move into a tie for eighth.

Well, we've not only got movement but pressure on the top.

Also, that group at two-under just had two big names and an absolute stunning comeback I'll get to in the next update.

A birdie on the second sees the US Open champion move into a tie with Aberg, Conners, and Scheffler for second.

A drive into the trees led to an awkward punch shot up against a pine and off the straw.

His approach shot flew beautifully and landed on the green to set up a calm birdie putt for the Irishman to move to one-under on the day.

A little movement at the top sees the field get closer to Rose, but there's nothing to worry about for him... yet.

A drive into the bunker forced him to lay-up off the green. A pitch on and two-putt followed and the lead has shrunk to three strokes.

Back-to-back birdies for the South Korean means that his two-under round is tied for the best of the day!

He moves up to three-under for the tournament and ties Bryson and Hatton.

The Englishman had a mixed day on Thursday with three birdies and two bogeys.

Looks like he's on the same track on Friday. After bogeying the first hole, he hit an eagle on the par-5 second to move to two-under and a tie for seventh.

McIlroy's tee shot finds the fairway and he's off and running in his second round.

Entering the day on the cut line, Homa bogeyed the first to go below the line and is now in danger of missing the third round.

Homa, grouped with Justin Rose and JJ Spaun, now reaches the fourth hole.

...He'd be the second-oldest to ever do it. He'd also be sandwiched between legends.

At age 44, Rose would be roughly two years younger than when Jack Nicklaus took the 1986 Masters.

He'd also be about a year older than Tiger Woods when he won the so-called 'Return to Glory' Masters in 2019.

Fred Couples, who currently holds the record of oldest golfer to make the cut at the Masters, is in the top 11 with a one-under first round.

He's two years younger than Langer. But if the German doesn't make the cut and Couples does, the American could extend his record.

Set to tee off later this morning, German golfer and two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer shot an opening round two-over.

That puts him on the right side of the projected cut line.

This is going to be his last Masters ever. If he somehow makes the cut, he'll be the oldest player in history to play Saturday and Sunday at the Masters.

His Thursday opening round was fantastic - vaulting him up to within the top-10 at one point before settling on an even par.

Friday? He opens with double bogey, bogey on holes 1 and 2

A tournament synonymous with its occasionally obscure traditions, the Masters has one that may have flown a bit under the radar for some golf fans.

The course hands out crystal to golfers who accomplish certain things throughout their rounds.

It's been a tradition since 1954 and there are four things that can be done to earn some silverware - er, crystalware?

• The day’s low score gets a crystal vase.
• An eagle receives a pair of crystal goblets.
• A hole-in-one earns a large crystal bowl.
• A double eagle also is rewarded with a large crystal bowl.

A majority of the groups that have gone off are those below the cut line. Only Rafael Campos has managed to move above the cut and we will likely see more of that later.

The tournament leader pures his drive down the fairway of the first hole for a solid opening shot.

As for his playing partners, Max Homa's drive goes left and just avoids the second cut while JJ Spaun also hits an incredibly solid drive.

It's gonna be gusty around Augusta!

Winds are set to be high throughout the day and a slight chance of rain in the later afternoon could complicate things for those with later tee times.

According to ESPN, the field is expected to be mowed down to 63 golfers sitting above the cut line of three-over-par.

It's one of the most expensive secondary-market tickets in all of sports, so getting to go to Augusta even once must be a truly life-changing experience for golf fans.

Judging by some of the attire from the patrons seen in the photos below, this isn't the first rodeo for a couple of people.

Just a few days ago, McIlroy was asked about Collin Morikawa refusing to speak to the media after the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The Irishman defended his fellow golfer, saying 'He's right' adding that other pro athletes are 'obligated to speak' to the media after contests and 'We're not.'

Well, after a Thursday even par performance that has him staring at a steep hill to climb if he wants to try and complete a career grand slam this week, McIlroy skipped out on the media in Augusta.

Augusta seems ripe and ready for some glorious conditions on Friday.

For those attending, it'll be a fantastic day of memory-making.

And it's a rough start for Cameron Davis. He's right on the cut line to start the second round, but a bogey on 1 leaves him struggling on +3 for the tournament. Austin Eckroat is even further back, and has also bogeyed - leaving him on +5 overall.

There's some dodgy weather forecast for later in the day, too, so some of these earlier groups may need to take advantage of the weather.

Max Homa had an awkward moment during his first round at the Masters yesterday, inadvertently smashing the ball into a caddie standing near the green. 'Come on dude', was his response, angrily berating the man... but whose fault was it? Homa or the caddie? You decide!

Yesterday was a *slightly* slower start in terms of big names getting out on the course, but that's certainly not the case today. Here's a few of the heavy-hitters that are already at Augusta National and heading out on the course soon:
